Yobe State Police have arrested a 54-year-old woman, Hamsatu Modu, from Morami Village in Jakana, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, on suspicion of trafficking ammunition.
The suspect was allegedly transporting ammunition from Buni Yadi to Damaturu in Yobe State when she was apprehended.
According to Dungus Abdulkarim, the spokesman for the Yobe State Police Command, Hamsatu Modu was arrested on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at around 6:30 PM following credible intelligence received by the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu.
“The Command has successfully apprehended Hamsatu Modu, 54, of Morami Village, Jakana Konduga LGA, Borno State, for trafficking ammunition from Buni Yadi to Damaturu,” Abdulkarim confirmed.
He further explained that swift action by the police led to the interception of a Golf 3 saloon car. Upon conducting a thorough search, officers discovered 350 rounds of live 7.62×39mm ammunition concealed within the suspect’s luggage.
The police spokesperson added that the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation as investigators work to uncover the network and motives behind the ammunition trafficking operation.
In a related development, Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, reiterated the Command’s commitment to fighting crime and urged the public to maintain their cooperation with security agencies. He advised community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, individuals, or objects to the nearest police station.
The investigation into this gunrunning case is ongoing, as authorities seek to dismantle the criminal network involved.
