Iran has extended the closure of its airspace and canceled all flights in anticipation of possible Israeli retaliation after launching a missile attack on Israel on Tuesday evening.
The decision, aimed at maintaining aviation security, will keep flights grounded until 5 am (0130 GMT) on Thursday, according to Iran’s state news agency ISNA, citing a spokesman for the aviation authority.
Initially, Iran had closed the airspace over Tehran, suspending all flights until Wednesday morning following its large-scale missile attack. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that it was in retaliation for the killings of key figures including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah, and an Iranian general.
The IRGC further claimed that three Israeli air bases and the headquarters of Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, were the primary targets of the missile barrage.
As tensions escalate in the region, the extended airspace closure underscores Iran’s concerns over potential Israeli military responses to the attack, with both nations remaining on high alert.
