Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended 24 suspected internet fraudsters in a coordinated operation across various locations in Benin City, the Edo state capital.
The arrests were made on Monday, September 30, 2024, following intelligence reports on the suspects’ involvement in cyber-related crimes.
In a statement released by the anti-graft agency, it was revealed that 11 exotic cars, laptops, mobile phones, and a sum of N160,000 were recovered during the operation.
“The suspects were arrested following actionable intelligence of their suspected involvement in computer-related fraud,” the EFCC stated.
The agency confirmed that the suspects had made useful statements to investigators and would face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
This is not the first time the EFCC has conducted raids to clamp down on internet fraud. In June 2024, the commission arrested 50 suspected fraudsters in Akure, Ondo State, following raids on two hotels and nightclubs. During that operation, vehicles, laptops, and high-end smartphones were also seized.
