A 41-year-old Canadian national, Adrienne Munju, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for smuggling a potent strain of synthetic cannabis known as “Canadian Loud” into Nigeria.
Munju was convicted for importing 74 parcels of the drug, weighing 35.20 kilograms, through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.
The conviction was handed down by Justice Dehinde Dipeolu following Munju’s guilty plea to a two-count charge filed against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The sentencing comes after her arrest on October 3, 2024, at Terminal 1 of the airport during the inward clearance of passengers arriving on a KLM flight.
According to the NDLEA, Munju admitted in her post-arrest statement that she was recruited via an online platform to smuggle the drugs for a fee of 10,000 Canadian dollars, which was to be paid upon successful delivery in Lagos.
The NDLEA’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Marwa, praised the agency’s officers and the judiciary for their swift action in the case, describing the conviction as a stern warning to others considering smuggling illicit substances into Nigeria.
“This verdict sends a clear message to both foreigners and Nigerians alike that drug trafficking will not be tolerated in our country,” Marwa said in a statement.
