Security has been significantly ramped up outside the Israeli embassy on Tughlak Road in New Delhi following a large-scale missile attack launched by Iran on Israel on Tuesday night.
The attack involved over 180 ballistic missiles aimed at Israel, prompting immediate security measures in various parts of the world, including the Indian capital.
Delhi Police have increased their presence around the embassy, deploying officers and erecting barricades to secure the area. The multi-layered security also includes the installation of several CCTV cameras, a response necessitated by previous security incidents at the embassy, including two explosions in 2021 and 2023, where no injuries were reported.
The heightened security in New Delhi follows recent blasts reported near the Israeli embassy in Denmark on Wednesday, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. In October 2023, the Delhi Police had already fortified security around the Israeli embassy and Chabad House amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Iran’s missile strike is seen as retaliation for Israeli military actions against Tehran-backed Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, following the assassination of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah. The missile barrage, which targeted areas near Tel Aviv, further escalated tensions in the region, already on edge since Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023.
In response, Israel activated its Iron Dome defence system, intercepting several missiles and urging its citizens to seek shelter, with sirens blaring across the country. The direct engagement between Iran and Israel has intensified fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East, where tensions have been steadily rising.
With both nations exchanging heavy fire, security authorities worldwide are on high alert, especially at Israeli embassies, as the risk of spillover incidents and attacks increases globally.
