The Delta State Police Command has arrested two women in connection with the purchase of a three-day-old baby boy for N2 million. The police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, stating that the baby has been successfully recovered. The suspects, identified as Tessi Ikechukwu and Lauretta Akomen, were apprehended on Tuesday with the help of a tricycle rider. According to Mr. Edafe, the women were caught after four women initially boarded a tricycle, and two of them alighted near the Effurun roundabout.“One of the two women who alighted handed over a newborn baby boy to the women left in the tricycle, and the rider overheard one of them saying the balance had been paid and that they should inform her when they reached their destination,” Mr. Edafe, a police superintendent, revealed.Sensing foul play, the tricycle rider diverted the two women and the baby to Ekpan Police Station, where the police quickly intervened.During interrogation, one of the suspects, 38-year-old Lauretta Akomen, confessed to buying the baby for N2 million from a traditional home in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The police disclosed that the home, which harbored teenage girls, facilitated pregnancies and sold the babies to interested buyers.Ms. Akomen further revealed that she was given a drug to take over a period to make her appear pregnant. She later led the police to an intermediary who acted as an agent between her and the traditional home.
