The Borno State Police Command has successfully rearrested another fugitive inmate who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Center in Maiduguri following last month’s severe flood that breached the facility.
The convict, identified as Auwalu Aminu, was serving time for criminal conspiracy and theft.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, announced the apprehension. “The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, has successfully re-arrested another escaped convict, Auwalu Aminu, also known as Auwalu Kirkir, aged 24,” he said.
According to ASP Daso, Aminu was initially incarcerated at the Maiduguri facility when the flood incident in September 2024 caused extensive damage, collapsing the prison fence and allowing several inmates to escape. Aminu managed to flee during the chaos.
On October 16, 2024, police surveillance in Banki town, under the Bama Area Command, acted on a credible tip-off regarding Aminu’s location. “The police patrol swiftly responded and apprehended the said Auwalu Aminu,” Daso explained.
The re-arrested convict has since been profiled and will be transferred back to the Nigerian Correctional Service for further processing. ASP Daso reiterated the Command’s commitment to public safety and urged citizens to report any information on fugitive inmates to the authorities. For reports, the public can contact the police through these numbers: 0806 807 5581, 0802 347 3293.
