Police Dismantle Armed Robbery Syndicate in Imo After Gun Duel

The Imo State Police Command has announced the dismantling of an armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorizing the Owerri North Local Government Area.

The operation, carried out by police operatives based on credible intelligence, led to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of firearms.

Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the command, said in a statement on Tuesday that officers apprehended Moses Nanzi, a 31-year-old suspect, following a gun duel. The incident unfolded in the early hours of October 15, 2024, when a patrol team from the Owerri North Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call about an armed robbery on Dominion Street near Don Kay.

“At approximately 3:20 AM, officers arrived at the scene where they encountered armed robbers who immediately opened fire. The officers, demonstrating bravery, maneuvered into strategic positions and effectively returned fire,” Okoye stated.

During the confrontation, one suspect was neutralized while Nanzi, who sustained a gunshot injury, was arrested. A double-barrel gun and seven live cartridges were recovered from him.

The police spokesperson also revealed that the remaining gang members managed to escape into nearby bushes. “A manhunt for the escapees is currently under way,” Okoye added.
