The Kano State Police Command has arrested 82 suspects in connection with various crimes across the state, ranging from kidnapping and armed robbery to phone snatching and drug dealing, between November 1 and November 14.
The arrests were part of a crime-busting strategy implemented by the command, said the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
“The implementation of these strategies has yielded positive results as they led to the crackdown on criminal networks, such as curtailing remnants of thuggery (Daba) activities within Kano Metropolis,” Kiyawa said. He added that the operations had dismantled armed robbery syndicates operating along the Jigawa-Kano and Bauchi-Kano borders, as well as foiling kidnapping incidents along the Kaduna-Kano and Katsina-Kano borders.
Kiyawa, speaking on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo, revealed that the police recovered an array of weapons and illegal items during the operations. Recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, three locally-made guns, 13 cutlasses, and 16 knives. Additionally, the police seized three motorcycles, one tricycle, 50 sachets of diazepam, 42 sachets of tramadol, 24 parcels, 175 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, and 10 mobile phones.
“These achievements demonstrate the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in Kano State,” Kiyawa said, adding that the police will continue to strengthen its crime-fighting strategies. He noted that the command’s approach focuses on community policing, intelligence-led operations, and strategic communication to sensitise the public on security matters.
Kiyawa also commended Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf for donating 78 patrol vehicles to the command, which he said will significantly enhance operational capacity and response time to better serve the people of the state.
