A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike targeting bandits in Shawu village, Ruwan Godiya district of Faskari Local Government Area, Katsina State, has sparked outrage over reports of civilian casualties. The operation, conducted early Thursday morning, was aimed at neutralizing terrorists in the region, but local sources claim it mistakenly hit civilians.Salihu Bamle Bakatsine, a Katsina resident, shared the incident on his X account, writing: “Moments ago, the Nigerian Air Force mistakenly bombarded the Shawu community. Several people are now confirmed dead, and many others injured. May the Almighty have mercy on those who lost their lives and grant healing to the injured.”However, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, refuted claims of an accidental bombing, insisting the operation was a precision strike based on verified intelligence.”Whoever told you the attack was accidental lied. The bomb was dropped on purpose; terrorists were the target. The Nigerian military is highly professional, striking only after thorough surveillance and confirmed intelligence,” Mu’azu stated. He further described Shawu as a known stronghold for bandits and criminals, saying, “Shawu has become notorious for harboring terrorists, which is why the area was targeted.”Musa Ado Faskari, Chairman of Faskari Local Government Area, supported this view, adding: “The airstrike was precise because bandits have infiltrated the community. While it’s unfortunate that innocent lives were lost, many residents had already fled Shawu due to the overwhelming presence of criminals.”Initial reports indicate at least four fatalities, though the number of injured remains unclear. Authorities are still assessing the situation to determine the full extent of the casualties and damage. The incident has sparked mixed reactions. While some commend the military’s efforts to combat terrorism in the region, others question the adequacy of measures to protect civilians during such operations.Shawu village has reportedly become a hub for criminal activities, including banditry and kidnapping, further complicating military operations. The controversy underscores the challenges of balancing counterterrorism efforts with the need to safeguard innocent lives in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
