Gunmen launched a deadly attack on the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area in Imo State, targeting the local police division and council headquarters. The assault, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, resulted in the deaths of a police officer and several security guards on duty.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the area, opening fire indiscriminately. The attack caused panic among residents, many of whom fled their homes in fear. The gunmen were said to have set ablaze parts of the council headquarters before escaping.
The police division in Ehime Mbano, which was one of the primary targets of the attack, sustained significant damage. The gunmen reportedly overpowered the officers on duty, killing one officer and several security guards who attempted to defend the facility.
A resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity described the scene as chaotic. “The sound of gunfire was deafening. It was terrifying; people were running in all directions,” the resident recounted.
This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks that have plagued the region, raising concerns about the escalating security situation in Imo State. Local authorities have condemned the attack and called for calm, assuring residents that efforts are being made to apprehend the perpetrators.
The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident, with a manhunt currently underway for the attackers. The command has also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
