The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for alleged conspiracy and involvement in the sale of newborn twins.
The suspects were apprehended by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division at Berger Bus Stop, a key entry point into Lagos State, following a tip-off from a Good Samaritan.
In a statement on Friday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that the women were found with two baby girls, approximately six days old, while travelling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.
“Investigations revealed that the suspects were enroute to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos State, who had been arranged by the mother of the infants. The mother had promised to provide further instructions once they arrived in Lagos,” the statement read.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being paid ₦150,000 to transport the babies to Lagos. They further disclosed that the mother sold the babies because she was unable to care for them properly.
The case has since been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command, and the newborns have been placed in a motherless babies home for proper care and medical evaluation. SP Hundeyin added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals involved in the conspiracy.
The arrested suspects were arraigned in court on Thursday, September 19, 2024, as investigations continue.
