BELLO MAWALLE

Why Northerners Dominate Tinubu’s Security Team, Says Matawalle

By Nafisat Abdulrahman

The minister of defence , Bello Matawalle, has addressed the reasons behind the dominance of Northerners in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security team.

Matawalle, the Former Governor of Zamfara State, explained that the decision was based on practical considerations, including trust and experience within the region’s security network.
Matawalle emphasized that the North has a rich history of security expertise, having dealt with various security challenges over the years.

This experience, he argues, positions Northern security personnel as well-suited to manage the President’s safety. Furthermore, the former governor mentioned that selecting trusted individuals who have a deep understanding of the region’s unique security dynamics ensures a more effective security apparatus around the President.

He also highlighted that the choice is not an exclusion of other regions but a strategic decision aimed at optimizing the security measures around Tinubu, given the current security landscape in the country. Matawalle reassured that there is an ongoing effort to incorporate security personnel from all parts of Nigeria to foster national unity and collaboration in ensuring the President’s safety.

The remarks have stirred varied reactions, with some seeing it as a pragmatic approach while others express concerns about regional imbalance. The discussion reflects the ongoing debates over regional representation in national affairs, especially in sensitive areas such as security.
