Goods worth millions of naira were lost as a fire ravaged a market in the Ajah area of Lagos, according to a statement from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Monday.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed that the fire broke out late Sunday night at Ajah Market, near Alesh Bus Stop in Lekki.
LASEMA responded to distress calls through the toll-free lines 767 and 112 at 9:30 PM, deploying its Emergency Response Team from the Lekki Base. The team arrived on the scene at 10:10 PM, where several shops and stores containing combustible materials were engulfed in flames.
“The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Oke-Osanyintolu said, adding that no casualties or injuries were reported.
He also noted that LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked together to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings. However, they faced the challenge of managing a large, agitated crowd as the only responders at the scene.
“The fire has been successfully extinguished, and the operation is now complete,” he concluded.
