Police Officer Killed by Okada Riders While Evacuating Accident Scene in Lagos

A 46-year-old assistant superintendent of police (ASP) was tragically killed by a group of motorcycle riders, commonly known as *okada* riders, in the Agege area of Lagos State on Saturday morning.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was leading a police team to the scene of a fatal accident involving a motorcycle rider who had collided with a trailer at WEMCO junction by Mobil Road, Pen Cinema, Agege.Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and explained the sequence of events leading to the officer’s death. “At about 01:40 hours, a distress call was received that a motorcycle rider ran into a trailer at WEMCO junction, Mobil Road, Pen Cinema, Agege, and died on the spot,” Hundeyin stated.He said that a police patrol team was immediately dispatched to the scene. “On arrival, the team met a large number of motorcycle riders gathered,” Hundeyin continued. “However, while the patrol team was in the process of evacuating the truck from the scene, the *okada* riders became hostile and attacked the officers, insisting on torching the truck.”During the chaos, the ASP sustained a severe head injury and died at the scene, while the truck driver managed to escape.The police have since evacuated the deceased officer’s body to the Mainland General Hospital Morgue in Yaba for an autopsy. In response to the violent incident, Hundeyin confirmed that five suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend other fleeing suspects involved in the attack.The tragic killing of the police officer has heightened concerns about rising tensions between law enforcement and motorcycle riders in Lagos.
