Seventy-five persons have been arrested by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) across the metropolis in a bid to eliminate street trading and other environmental nuisances across the state.
Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources in the state, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab disclosed the arrest via his verified X handle.
Wahab stated that the operation was conducted overnight in continuation of LAGESC’s raid on persons constituting public nuisance across the metropolis.
He stated, “In a strategic overnight clearance operation, operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) apprehended 75 individuals comprising five females and 70 males suspected to be miscreants and street traders.
“The operation, aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring a cleaner Lagos, was conducted across key areas, including; Ikoyi & Lekki Axis: Lugard Avenue, Bourdillon Road, Glover Road, Admiralty Way, Lekki Estate Road, Ikate, and Oniru Road.”
Other areas where the operation was carried out include Victoria Island axis; Ahmadu Bello Way, Saka Tinubu Street, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Violet Yough Close, Adeyemo Alakija, Eko Hotel Roundabout, and Ajose Adeogun.
Wahab said that the arrested persons will face prosecution in accordance with the relevant laws of Lagos State.
He added that Lagos State remains committed to creating a safe, clean, and orderly environment for all residents and visitors.
Wahab also encouraged residents to adhere to state regulations and cooperate with enforcement agencies in upholding the vision of Greater Lagos.
Meanwhile, in another raid conducted on Tuesday, 27 persons, including 15 minors involved in unlawful acts of street begging in traffic, were apprehended during the operation.
“All suspects will be transferred to appropriate government facilities in line with relevant enabling laws,” Wahab said.
