Tragedy struck at Orlu International Market in Imo State on Tuesday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, killing at least two people and injuring several others.
The explosion caused widespread panic, leading to a stampede as residents and traders scrambled for safety. According to eyewitnesses, chaos erupted as the blast echoed through the market. “We were going about our business when we heard an explosion. There was confusion everywhere as people ran for their lives. Some people were killed in the explosion,” one witness recounted, adding that the community now lives in fear.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Henry Okoye stated that two individuals, believed to be the masterminds behind the IED, were killed in the explosion. “It was an IED that exploded. The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has deployed Anti-Bomb operatives to the scene,” he said.
Okoye reassured the public, emphasizing that there is no cause for alarm. “We have deployed operatives to the area. We urge everyone to remain calm and maintain peace,” he added.
The Imo State Police Command has called on citizens to report any suspicious activities in their surroundings and to stay vigilant as investigations continue.
